“I wanted to share my knowledge and guide others”
In this latest Staff Spotlight story Ryan shares how his career has developed at St Christopher’s, from starting as a Residential Children’s Worker to now being registered manager of a children’s home.
What attracted you to your new role?
I have had the experience of working with some great managers in St Christopher’s who have taught me so much, so when the opportunity arose I wanted to do the same by sharing my knowledge and guiding others.
What have been the main differences in this role to your previous one?
Getting used to 9-5! On another note, becoming a manager I have had to learn to wear multiple hats at the same time to ensure I am there for everyone and that the home is ticking along nicely. I find myself now always checking through policies and asking more questions to ensure I am meeting the regulations on a day to day basis. My previous role allowed more time on the floor making those memories with the young people and staff whereas now it feels I’m watching from afar sometimes.
Have you experienced any challenges in your new role?
Coming over as manager to an existing home meant challenges around creating professional relationships with both staff and young people, especially those who I previously worked with as a Residential Children’s Worker.
What things have helped you to settle in?
The fact I have been able to reach out to other managers within the Midlands region has really helped me settle in.
What would you say to other St Christopher’s staff who are thinking about going for a promotion?
Go for it! I think when it comes to thinking about going for a promotion, you should already know within whether it is right for you. Give yourself a confidence boost and always ask for support if you need it.
