Celebrating Sons and Daughters Month!

Hannah: I am part of a foster family

Every October is Sons and Daughters Month, a campaign set up to raise awareness of the integral role the children of foster carers play in making a foster child feel welcome, safe and at home.

Hannah is a young person who lives with her mum and her foster siblings. She has shared her experiences to show other young people that it’s OK to have questions or worries before your parents start fostering.

How did you feel when your mum first wanted to start fostering?

I felt weird because I didn’t know what to expect.

What do you like most about fostering?

That I’m not an only child and that I can help to give other children a loving home.

What have you learnt about fostering?

That I have a great life compared to other people and sometimes I take it for granted.

What would you say to other young people whose mum and dad want to start fostering?

It’s not as bad as you think – like any brother or sister they can get a bit annoying, but they’re worth it.
