Black poetry inspires St Christopher’s
Young people, foster carers and staff from across St Christopher’s celebrated Black History Month with a virtual poetry session on Great Black Britons.
Everyone had the opportunity to share their own poems and enjoy readings of Maya Angelou, Deanna Rodger, Lemn Sissay, George the Poet and Suli Breaks.
One poem from a staff member explored the life of Black soldier George Ryan, who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and features on the engraving at the bottom of Nelson’s Column in central London. His poem is a reminder that Black people have played key parts throughout British history.
There was also a very special performance from a young person living with one of our foster families, who read his own poem on the Black Lives Matter movement to a round of applause from the other attendees.
The drop-in ended with a video of We Belong by Lemn Sissay, which left everyone in a celebratory mood having learnt more about Black history and culture.
