Sons and Daughters Month
Celebrating the children of foster carers

Sons and Daughters Month

Every October is Sons and Daughters Month, a national event established by The Fostering Network to celebrate the children of foster carers.

Fostering charities and agencies across the UK spend the month saying thank you to the children who welcome other young people into their homes.

My children had to share their time and family with other children and that’s made them very caring and understanding of the world.
Connie, foster carer

Celebrating the children of foster parents

We involve foster carers’ own children in all of our activities and award ceremonies. The contribution they make is invaluable, whether they are young and still live at home, or are older with families of their own.

Sometimes children in care can find it easier to settle into a new home if people of the same age are around. A birth child has a foot in both camps – they understand how their family works, but they understand where a young person is coming from.

Being part of a foster family can be a really rewarding experience for a child. They play a key role in making sure another child has a safe, loving home and the chance at a brighter future. Our foster carers’ experiences highlight how important family support can be to make a young person feel like they belong.
