“Don’t let fear get in the way”
Are you looking for a career where you can make a real difference? Beth switched careers to work with young people at St Christopher’s and has recently been promoted at one of our semi-independent homes. Read her story now and discover if a career at St Christopher’s could be right for you.
What attracted you to your new role?
I started at St Christopher’s in September 2019 as a Support Worker and quickly felt like I’d really found the right career for me – I worked in a Finance company for the last seven years! I already had my eye on the Team Leader role so had taken on some extra responsibilities, but I thought I would have more time to develop before a vacancy opened up.
What have been the main differences in this role to your previous one?
I am still keyworker to three young people at the moment. I am really glad my new role still leaves time for interactions with the young people and getting them ready to move onto independence. Now I am also responsible for the rota, petty cash returns, supervisions, creating reports and generally more administrative stuff, which is great because I love using Excel for anything and everything!
Have you experienced any challenges in your new role?
We have two Support Worker vacancies at the moment which means it can be difficult to cover the rota and ensure young people still feel supported. It has been interesting to be on the other side of the recruitment process and give my input on who we recruit.
What things have helped you to settle in?
Definitely the support from my team and manager, it was really nice to feel accepted into the new role! I was also worried that I didn’t have much management experience but the management development training so far has been really interesting, helpful and a great opportunity to meet other new Team Leaders and Deputy Managers.
What would you say to other St Christopher’s staff who are thinking about going for a promotion?
If you are thinking of it, don’t let fear get in the way, give it a go!
