Award winners announced

Five winners of this year’s Hickinbotham Awards have been announced, with money going towards business courses, computer software and outdoor equipment, all of which will help young people reach their full potential.

The awards were created in 2011 by Tony Hickinbotham, a previous Chair of St Christopher’s, and his wife Susan, a former trustee. They are an annual award for young people who would like financial assistance that will help them achieve their goals.

This fits really well with St Christopher’s commitment to showing young people the value, skills and worth that they bring to the world through our social pedagogic approach.

A young person from a 16+ service will receive funding for a printer, camera, mannequin and fabric to support her fashion design course at college. She has been going from strength to strength on her course and is excited to pursue a career in the industry.

Another young person will be able to buy a laptop with Windows software to support their business administration studies.

One young person living in one of our children’s homes would love to become an outdoor instructor. With his award he can buy a mountain bike, wetsuit, outdoor clothing, walking boots, rucksack, tent and sleeping bag to gain experience in this field and get his career started.

A young person supported by the Isle of Man Aftercare team has received money to go on a business course, which will help him start working for himself as a photographer and videographer.

The final winner will be using the money to build their own computer that they can use to create drawings and express themselves creatively.

Director of Income and Development, Geneva Ellis, said: “The applications for this year’s award were so impressive, and I am really excited that these five young people can take a step closer to getting where they want to be. Thank you so much to the Hickinbothams for your continued support each year, and well done to the winners.”
