What is fostering?

Foster carers welcome children into their homes who cannot live with their birth parents.  Foster carers provide a safe and caring family environment where children can thrive.  Fostering is challenging and hard work, but it is also fun and rewarding.

"Once you become a foster carer, don't worry if you do have any problems, because you are not alone - you are part of a big team" St Christopher's foster carer

Children need foster carers for a variety of reasons:

  • A foster child may need to live away from home for a short time whilst social workers help their family to sort themselves out.
  • A child's parents may be ill or have mental health problems.
  • A foster child may have been neglected or physically or sexually abused and cannot remain in the family home.
  • The parents may have drug or alcohol problems affecting their parenting ability.
  • A foster child may be an unaccompanied refugee or seeking asylum.
  • The family may need a break from being carers of a disabled child - this is called short break fostering.

Foster children and young people may be placed with foster carers on their own or with their brothers and sisters.
