Training for foster carers

We can help you become a successful foster carer

"I think you get very good support with St Christopher's. I like attending courses on a monthly basis as well as the support groups which I think are very important." St Christopher's foster carer

At St Christopher’s we believe:

  • in comprehensive and continuous training programmes for our foster carers, so that they feel confident in the care they provide for children and young people.
  • that it is important to keep our staff and foster carers up to date with the latest developments and therapeutic techniques.
  • that ongoing training ensures that our foster carers are better able to deal with unexpected and challenging situations.
  • that comprehensive training helps our foster carers to be aware of the discrimination felt by many looked-after children and helps them to find strategies to cope with it.
  • that our foster carers deserve to gain recognised qualifications in childcare.

We provide access to and support for AKAMAS e-learning programmes, specifically designed for workers in the social care field.

The key elements that make up our fostering training are:

  • identity and self-esteem
  • preparing fostered young people for independence
  • health of looked-after children
  • education of fostered children/young people
  • empowering children and young people
  • valuing diversity and promoting equality
  • advocating for children and young people
  • working with foster children who have been abused
  • managing difficult behaviour
  • managing and promoting contact
  • first aid and health and safety
  • safe foster caring
  • child protection
  • effective recording.

Specialist training includes:
