Learning disability services

We work with people with learning disabilities to support and assist them in

  • making everyday choices and important decisions
  • maximising their potential
  • being part of the community, as well as their home.

We believe in focusing on what people potentially can do, not what they can’t do.

Our service delivery is based on the four key principles of valuing people: choice, independence, inclusion and rights

Our caring, experienced professional staff encourage and actively support all service users with learning disabilities to

  • reach their full potential
  • make life and everyday choices, like all of us.  They are offered as many alternatives as possible, and these are fully explained to them.
  • make important decisions, like all of us. Their options are fully explained to them and they are offered as many alternatives as possible
  • be part of their community
  • feel safe
  • stay as healthy as possible
  • have the opportunity for learning and development or work, as appropriate
  • develop and maintain meaningful friendships and relationships
  • be involved in the decision making process regarding who they live with and who provides a service to them
  • feel in control of their life.

St Christopher’s staff are committed to actively ensuring that all service users are given maximum privacy and treated with respect, to treating people in age-appropriate ways, and to actively engaging with service users’ families or advocates.

At St Christopher’s, person-centred planning is led by the person as far as possible, with support from staff as required. A two-plan process is offered for each individual:

  • the care plan addresses the care needs of the person, including how best to provide personal care to meet his/her needs, health matters, likes and dislikes about food and daily routines, outings and activities
  • the individual support plan outlines the service user’s needs and aspirations as well as showing how the service being delivered has changed the service user’s life and how St Christopher’s support can maximise their potential. This offers a wider perspective, looking at all the life domains. It also includes a risk analysis and plan addressing issues of risk and detailing strategies to manage those risks in order to maximise the service user’s quality of life through independence and choice.
