New learning difficulties centre in the Isle of Man

12 October 2007

We are proud to announce the opening of St Christopher's new learning difficulties service in the Isle of Man.

In its beautiful rural setting, the new centre offers full residential care for three young people, for as long as they need it.

The aim is to prepare these young people for independent living and to enable them to fulfil their potential and make a positive contribution to society.

The new centre has a new name: Thie Gennal (Manx for Happy House). It was chosen by the young people themselves, together with the staff and one of the St Christopher’s Isle of Man trustees, who supplied a book of Manx names for inspiration.

The staff and young people have settled in well, and are pleased with the extra space and new facilities in this centre. The ensuite bathrooms were greeted with much enthusiasm, and for one young person in particular, the separate quiet lounge has been a boon. They will also benefit from St Christopher's specialist education support service.

The young people have met some of their neighbours, and pots of homemade jam have already winged their way across the road into Thie Gennal.
