The publication of the 2006-7 report on the London Refuge and Family Support Service for runaway children and young people confirms that this vital resource is as necessary and appreciated as ever by the young runaways who have used the service.
The first half of the report provides statistical information about the use of the Refuge. For example:
- There were 442 referrals made to the Refuge between April 2006 and March 2007, resulting in 212 admissions
- Of the 212 admissions, 150 (71%) were admitted for the first time
- 157 admissions were girls, and 55 boys
- 121 ran away because of conflicts with family members (other reasons for running include physical or sexual abuse, death, remarriage or arrest of parent)
- 96 returned home or to extended families after their stay at the Refuge
- Over this period, 38 young people were unable to be admitted as there were no beds available when they were referred
The second half of the report shows the results of anonymous feedback forms that the young people were asked to place in a box upon leaving the Refuge.
Among the comments left by young people on what made them feel safe or unsafe are the following:
- I felt safe because no-one knows where the Refuge is
- Because I was away from what was going on at home and at the Refuge there was always someone to talk to
- The big lockable doors. The fact that there is always one worker sleeping over at night
- Because no-one knew where I was, so they couldn't get me even if they wanted to
The following among the many replies left by young people about how they felt when leaving the Refuge:
- Very happy because it feels like my life is moving forward, even if it is bit by bit
- Very happy because I have finally sorted it out with my mum
- Kinda sad because I made some good friends and I like the atmosphere when all of us are together
- I feel happy that I am going home, but this is my second home and I don't want to leave. Thank you.
- I would like to thank all the staff for the help they have given me and for helping me face my problems and try to deal with them
Parents and carers commented on the family support service provided by the Refuge, including:
- Your help undoubtedly rebuilt a damaged relationship along with parental love and care
- I was very surprised to find out that we would receive support as our daughter was only with you for five days. It was very gratefully received and very needed.
- Staff were more than helpful
