Limegrove bike maintenance celebration

26 March 2007

A celebration lunch was held at Limegrove Hostel last Monday to mark the completion of the award-winning course of bicycle repair and maintenance classes.

A good turnout of Limegrove residents and supported housing service users came to enjoy the food and refreshments and make a few final modifications to their bikes.

All the St Christopher's service users who attended the course have developed a range of skills around the building and maintenance of bicycles. Many now have newly renovated bikes, enabling them to go to appointments and events anywhere in London without worrying about the cost of public transport.

The classes were funded by Transport for London and run by Cycle Training UK. The Metropolitan Police also donated a number of unclaimed bike parts. Over the course of the workshops, residents learned to use these parts to build complete working bikes.

A follow-up course is being designed for the young people in one of St Christopher's children's homes in north-west London. This will focus on cycling proficiency, to enable service users to use bikes safely in and around London. They will also learn basic bike maintenance, puncture repair, etc.

The bike maintenance classes at Limegrove have been a great success
