Having opened two residential homes for children on behalf of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, St Christopher’s is proud to be launching a new fostering service.
The service is designed to offer foster placements to young people aged seven and over who are looked after by Sandwell, but for various reasons have not been able to settle with previous foster carers. These young people all have difficulties forming or maintaining relationships with adults or other young people. They may well have been abused or neglected. They are very likely to have low self esteem which can lead to challenging and difficult behaviour. Their foster carers will work closely with other professionals to understand the child’s background and behaviour and work together to support the child.
Annette Richards, regional manager for St Christopher’s, explains that they are looking for potential foster carers who have experience of working with children and young people, maybe through their job or their own family experience:
“You’ll need enthusiasm, patience and energy. A sense of humour would help too! Whatever your background though, you need to genuinely like young people and believe that with the right support and environment, they have the potential to make positive changes in their lives.”
