Tynwald art exhibition

St Christopher’s launches art exhibition ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’.

Art work created during St Christopher’s Isle of Man summer art project is now on display in the Douglas' Legislative Buildings.  The work is being exhibited from 5th to 26th August.

When young people from across St Christopher’s Isle of Man were given the opportunity to express themselves through art, little did they know that the result would be a three week exhibition at Tynwald.

The project aims to increase public understanding and awareness of the emotional and mental experiences that young people in care have been through but are unable to express in words.

The opportunity to use art to express themselves will not only be an insight for the public but it has also proved to be of huge benefit to the young people. They were able to discuss feelings and translate them into colours; red for warmth and energy, pink for love and romance, blue for tranquillity, green for nature and the environment, grey for security, white for peace and black for anger and fear.

Communication is so important for these young people who often feel that they are not listened to and their voices not heard. At St Christopher’s we are always looking at new ways to communicate, be it through film, music or art.

This day has been great, relaxing and working on our art has been a cool thing to do. Art project participant

Putting together four pieces each for the exhibition has been rewarding and we are looking forward to showing them off at the Exhibition."  Art project participant

Our partnership with St Christopher’s has enabled us to focus on listening to and supporting children and young people in their life journey. This is a great example of the children’s talents.  Member for Social Services Bill Malarkey MHK

"I am looking forward to attending the Exhibition and meeting the young people involved. I understand that they have worked extremely hard to create and assemble their pieces of artwork and wish to thank them and the staff for their hard work and commitment. This is another example of our working in partnership with our child care providers and I am sure this will be a splendid exhibition."  Hon Martyn Quayle, MHK Minister for Social Care
