A popular TV series became the inspiration for an adventurous evening out for young people living in St Christopher’s Assessment Centres.
With a tiny budget (just £6 per head), our young people were challenged to a cook-off for ten - yes, ten - people whilst being judged by their guests on Presentation, Hostess skills, Taste and Creativity - following the lines of the Channel 4 series.
The event took place over three days and participants were treated to curried goat, jerk chicken and a traditional shepherd’s pie - with a twist. Not only did the young people have to prepare all courses and be judged upon it all, they also had to consider guests’ allergies, vegetarianism and culture needs. The food was judged outstanding – although (or maybe because) there was no help from staff on the cooking side.
Fielding Road was the overall winner, but with a special mention for runner-up Belmont Park where a young person cooked single-handedly – winning a cooking lesson with a top chef.
The result was great cuisine, plenty of socialising that gave young people the opportunity to see other Centres – not to mention AQAs on the way.
