St Christopher's welcomes the Isle of Man decision to use the children's secure care home, rather than adult prison, for 17 year olds serving sentences or time on remand.
Until the beginning of this year 17 year olds in the Isle of Man were sent to the prison alongside adults. However an inspection of prison services in the island deemed that this was ‘inappropriate’.
Minister for Social Care Martyn Quayle MHK said: ‘Specially trained staff at St Christopher’s are able to offer rehabilitative programmes in a targeted and intensively supported way to provide the best possible chances for 17- year-olds not to re-offend once released back into the community. The root causes of criminal activity can also be better explored and built into preventative programmes which are then closely monitored and reviewed.’
