"My journey to Fifteen...
In July 2011 I was jobless but making every effort to find a job. My key worker, Naomi, came across a leaflet for an apprenticeship with Jamie Oliver's Fifteen programme for disadvantaged young adults. Most of the applicants haven't had a proper chance to make something of themselves. Knowing how much I enjoy cooking Naomi gave me the information and supported me in doing my online application.
I applied for and was invited to an initial interview including a taste test. I then had a further two interviews in order to gain my place on the programme.
My second interview included a cook off where I was tasked with making spaghetti bolognaise. I was very nervous, but after cooking the meal one of the tutors complimented me on my efforts which gave me a lot of confidence.
Since I was successful in the interviews I started the apprenticeship programme at the beginning of September. I'm very much enjoying being there and I'm having a wicked time.
Throughout the application process I was supported by my key worker Naomi as well as other St Christopher's staff. They accompanied me to every interview and came to my open day.
My advice to young people is to never give up because there is always something or someone out there to give you a chance. Take advantage of the help offered by key workers, they really are trying to help you get a better start in life."
